A Neurologic Music Therapist (NMT) is a health professional with advanced training in a system of standardized techniques that use the functional properties of music to train and retrain brain and behavior function. The Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy® is endorsed by the World Federation of Neurorehabilitation (WFNR), the European Federation of Neurorehabilitation Societies (EFNS) and the International Society for Clinical Neuromusicology (CNM).
To be a music therapist in Canada, an individual must complete an approved music therapy program at an accredited university, complete 1,200 hours of supervised clinical training and pass the board certification exam.

-
No prior experience is required to participate in Neurologic Music Therapy! NMTs are trained to help individuals with no musical background use music to achieve non-musical goals in the cognitive, sensorimotor and speech and language domains.
-
Then a Neurologic Music Therapist would make an excellent addition to your therapy team! NMTs work on functional, non-musical goals just as you would in other therapies, the only difference is that music is the driving force. NMTs often work in conjunction with other health care professionals including physiotherapy, speech and language pathology, occupational therapy and more in order to address rehabilitative, adaptive, and developmental goals. If you’re looking for cotreatment, please include this in your consultation.
-
In addition to Neurologic Music Therapy sessions, clients can expect an initial assessment which includes administering and scoring standardized assessments, a treatment plan with individualized goals and objectives reviewed every 12 weeks, weekly progress notes available on request and a treatment summary at discharge of services. At Rhythmic Rehab we are committed to working with our clients to meet their goals and rediscover their inner rhythm.
-
For in-home sessions, the Neurologic Music Therapist will provide all equipment. For online sessions, an Internet-connected device (such as a desktop, laptop or tablet) with a webcam and microphone are required. For telehealth to be effective, audio and visual are required. All online sessions will be conducted on Zoom or Google Meet using a secure link.
-
Every session will look different! This depends on the client’s unique needs and their non-musical goals and objectives. A Neurologic Music Therapy session may include anything from walking or moving to music, playing different instruments, responding to musical cues, singing or songwriting.
-
A typical Neurologic Music Therapy session is one-hour in length. This ensures we can target a variety of goals with care. However, sessions are also offered at lengths of 30 minutes and 45 minutes in order to suit each client’s unique needs.
-
Clients can choose to receive services in-home or online. This can be indicated on your consultation form. Please note that conducting sessions in-home may not be possible depending on location, home setting and client goals.
-
A minimum of one session per week is recommended. Ultimately, this will depend on each client’s unique needs and their lifestyle.
-
Notice of 24 hours or more in advance is appreciated. Sessions cancelled or rescheduled with less than 24 hours notice may be subject to payment of the full price of the session depending on the circumstances.
